The best things in life are sweet: Fresh coffee and hand-crafted doughnuts at 49th Parallel Coffee Roasters and Lucky’s Doughnuts in Mount Pleasant. This is Stop 3 in our weekly Search for Vancouver’s Best Coffee.

At one point in everyone’s life, you settle for less. Sure there is shame involved, but you do it anyway. So you crave something sweet and swing by a Safeway and slip on flimsy plastic bag gloves to fish out of the bakery bin some doughnuts soggily clumped together. Do you do it because after 7pm any day doughnuts are half price? Maybe.
Well ever since we tasted the Best Doughnut Ever, I’m going to have to ask Mike to up his doughnut standards.

Max: An East Van Dog

Mike checked his watch. 4 o’clock. Time to go home and feed Max. Wherever Mike was, whether it was hanging out at Metrotown, shooting hoops at Hastings Community Centre, or hitting tennis balls with his buddies – it was always the same.

When that hand hit the four on his watch, little Mike predictably waved goodbye to his friends. You could draw a dotted line from wherever he was to his journey home to East Van. This pattern occurred for several years to the point that it was mentioned in Mike’s grade 12 yearbook, “Sorry guys, gotta feed my dog.” Continue reading Max: An East Van Dog
